Concrete Asset Protection

Concrete deteriorates from the surface inward, often sustaining damage long before it becomes visible. Protecting the surface helps prevent deterioration, extends service life, and preserves the structure beneath it.

What Protection Entails

Protecting concrete requires a durable barrier against water and chemical intrusion while accommodating normal substrate movement.

Barrier Performance

Spray-applied Intellathane systems create a seamless, monolithic membrane that helps prevent water and dissolved chemicals from reaching the concrete substrate.

Crack Bridging

Elastomeric Intellathane systems accommodate substrate movement, with elongation ranging from 150% to 800% depending on the system.

Bond Integrity

Long-term performance depends on maintaining a strong bond to the substrate. Intellathane systems are tested for adhesion under ASTM D4541, with system-specific results available on the technical data sheets.

Surface Preparation & Repair

Proper repair and surface preparation in accordance with applicable ICRI and AMPP standards are essential to achieving a durable bond and long-term performance.

Independent Research

Peer-reviewed research supports the use of polyurea coatings to enhance the durability and resilience of concrete structures. Studies have demonstrated the ability of polyurea coatings to bridge surface cracks and help limit the penetration of water and other corrosive substances.

Additional research on polyurea-coated concrete beams has demonstrated increased deformation capacity, improved impact performance and energy absorption, and greater resilience to chemicals and corrosion.

Sources: Structures (2025); Materials (2022); Construction and Building Materials (2022). Research evaluates polyurea coatings as a material class and is not specific to Intellathane™ systems.

What Delayed Action Costs

Concrete deterioration is progressive, and repair costs increase as damage advances. A sound surface may require only preparation and coating, while deteriorated concrete requires repair before protection can be applied. Once corrosion reaches the reinforcing steel, structural rehabilitation may be necessary, significantly increasing both cost and disruption.
