Wastewater Infrastructure

Wastewater is one of the harshest environments for concrete and steel infrastructure. Protecting these assets keeps facilities operating reliably and postpones the need for expensive repairs or replacement.

What Protection Entails

Wastewater environments demand protection against multiple forms of deterioration:

  • Acid attack in the vapor phase
  • Abrasion at flow surfaces
  • Cracking caused by structural movement
  • Challenging or deteriorated substrates

System Selection

Intellathane systems are 100% solids, spray-applied, and fast-curing, helping return critical wastewater infrastructure to service in hours rather than days.

Surface Preparation

Proper surface preparation is essential. Deteriorated concrete must be repaired and prepared to the required profile in accordance with applicable ICRI and AMPP standards to promote a durable, long-term bond.

Chemical Resistance

Intellathane systems are tested against common chemicals found in wastewater environments, including sulfuric acid, with ratings for continuous immersion, temporary immersion, and incidental contact.

Independent Research

Peer-reviewed research supports the use of polyurea coatings in demanding water and wastewater environments. A 2026 study evaluating polyurea coatings for concrete protection in wastewater infrastructure found no visible cracking, blistering, spalling, or other mechanical surface damage after 28-day exposure to aggressive solutions, including sulfuric acid at concentrations of 1% and 10%.

Separate field research examining polyurea coatings in a water-conveyance tunnel after five years of service reinforces the importance of bond integrity, identifying interface damage and debonding among the primary failure modes affecting coating performance.

Sources: Scientific Reports (2026); Materials (2024). Research evaluates polyurea coatings as a material class and is not specific to Intellathane™ protective coatings.

What Delayed Action Costs

Delaying protection can turn a planned coating project into a more costly and disruptive structural repair. As deterioration progresses and moisture reaches reinforcing steel, corrosion can lead to cracking, delamination, and concrete loss—requiring more extensive rehabilitation and longer outages. Protecting structures while deterioration is still limited helps preserve plant capacity, extend asset life, and reduce future repair costs and downtime.
